Okular running on SmartQ7 (Ver.5.0)- Highlight your PDF

Now it’s possible to highlight your PDF’s on SmartQ7. With the new firmware ver.5.0 comes with a Ubuntu repository and in there you can find vast amount of apps. Okular is one of them. SmartQ7 is ideal as a e-reader. But it would be great if you can make notes and highlight text in the pdf you are you are reading right? The default pdf reader that comes installed, Evince, will not let you do much except viewing it. But Okular lets you.

I bought this PMP primarily for reading books and technical papers. Once I started reading stuff I wanted to be able to make notes on the files I read. I was on ver.3.0 and many things get Okular installed on it, because as far I know, there is no other easier available app will let you do that. The effort was not fruitful. I flashed to ver.4.0 in hope of a chance, but same fate. Okular is KDE based so it needs to install a lot, and I mean nearly 200MB of additional libraries to satisfy it’s dependencies. And the default repository did not have these libraries. Adding other repositories left me with a broken system. Running out of options but really wanting to get Okular I installed Mer 0.15 on this. Luckily, that repository had Okular and could satisfy all the dependencies. That installation wasover 200MB. Half way through installation it quit with insufficient space. Again I was left with a broken system. I reflashed Mer again and installed Evince and accepted the defeat.

Then couple of days ago ver.5.0 came out. I had read before that  it will be using a Ubuntu port but I wasn’t sure until I installed (just sudo apt-get install okular) and got it running. It was about 180MB this time. Took a while to download and install and on the way got some errors (or maybe warnings?) abount a kernel multicast. Ignored it and the installation finished. And you see the final product in the photo above. It is a pretty big app and will take a while to open up. I cannot comment much about the usability because it is subjective. The highlighting works and I will soon post a vid on that.
