Linux+ vs LPIC-1

I recently finished LPIC-1 and Linux+ and thought I should share my views on these two certifications. I first finished LPIC-1 and wrote an entry about it few days ago here . My initial impression was (before doing) LPIC-1 is that it is harder and covers a much broader area than Linux+. And thought studying for LPIC-1 would automatically prepare me for Linux+. Although not entirely true, it is to somewhat. It is difficult to say one is a subset of the other. The two clearly has content that is mutually exclusive. But overall, my impression between the two is that, LPIC-1 is a little difficult than...

LPIC-1: A Review

I very recently finished both LPI-1 and CompTIA Linux+ so decided to write a brief review. This one is on LPIC-1 and Linux+ follows soon. I started with LPIC. Preparation for the first part of level-1 took me quite a while but I finished part-2 within two weeks of finishing part-1. A little rundown on what I did. LPIC-1 part-1: Primary study material: Linux Certification in a Nutshell – O’Reilly Secondary study materials: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/lpi/ Practice exams: http://www.mcmcse.com/forums/exams/index.php http://www.penguintutor.com/cgi-bin/quiz/index.pl Study...

Dual CPU (not core) Netbooks? Really, what’s a netbook?

Engadget (http://tinyurl.com/yc9bmva) reports of what could possibly be the first ever netbook with dual CPUs. This is two physical N270 Atoms in a netbook. The term netbook now gets thrown around easily everywhere. It seems that whatever device that houses an Atom gets called a netbook or a nettop and now tablets. There is no doubt Atoms made a complete turnaround of consumer/handheld computer devices. Last couple of years has seen a true paradigm shift in the way mobility and portability are integrated in to small-scale devices due to Atom. Atom powered devices have been swarming the mobile sector...

SCJP – Best final practice exam

It took me a while to take the SCJP. I finished Kathy and Berts study guide and was scoring in the 90’s in the practice questions. But I knew I wasn’t ready. Although I had taken platfrom 2 of SCJP about 4 years and did it quite easily, even with half of the Java knowledge I have now, SCJP 5.0 felt much harder. I wanted to write this small entry to discuss the path I took for the SCJP. The most important place to note is http://www.javaranch.com/. There you will find lots of information and hundreds of Java pioneers who are willing to help you. If you are studying for SCJP I’m sure...

SmartQ7 Review – Initial impressions

So it’s barely 24 hours since I received the SmartQ7. Hope you had a look at the photos I posted earlier. I had sometime to play around with it so I will round up my initial impression briefly. 1) Solid build for $200 device. You are definitely getting worth your money. 2) A tab heavy for prolonged periods of handheld use, but the luxury of a 7″ comes at cost. 3) Ideal as an eReader. Can view in landscape and portaint mode and “fit to width” option will nicely adjust the page to the screen. The application is “Evince”. 4) Ubuntu inside. Meaning you can do...

OPINION: Will there be an iPhone killer, ever?

(Ok so when I say ever, I mean in the foreseeble future.) A few brain numbing facts to start off with. Wikipedia says that more than 21 million iPhone units have been sold since its’ introduction in June of 2007. So it’s only been a little more than 2 years. Thats an astounding number of units. So, will there be an iPhone killer? Since its introduction, every now and then you see a smartphone entering in to the market as a potential iPhone killer. But they hardly even slap on iPhone, let alone killing it. They just dissapear. So why I wanted to write this opinion piece? Because I am someone...

Okular running on SmartQ7 (Ver.5.0)- Highlight your PDF

Now it’s possible to highlight your PDF’s on SmartQ7. With the new firmware ver.5.0 comes with a Ubuntu repository and in there you can find vast amount of apps. Okular is one of them. SmartQ7 is ideal as a e-reader. But it would be great if you can make notes and highlight text in the pdf you are you are reading right? The default pdf reader that comes installed, Evince, will not let you do much except viewing it. But Okular lets you. ...

SmartQ7 on Ver.5.0 Firmware

Flashed my SmartQ7 with the newest firmware, ver.5.0 and so far it is pretty good. It looks and feels much better than ver.4.0. This version looks more polished. The most important is run a Ubuntu Karmic Koala port meaning you will access to a large number of applications that are available for a normal Ubuntu installation. Let me walk you through briefly. Click the links for larger photos. (http://www.technicaljar.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Shot1.JPG) Here is a screen shot. If you have seen ver.4.0 you’d immediately notice that this is much different. This version has a dock at the bottom...

Arduino Ehternet Shield

So here’s my first real post. I received the Arduino Ethernet Shield today. Plugged it in top of the Arduino board, connected the USB and a Ethernet cable and I was ready to go. Honestly the exact workings of the code is a little mystery for me at the moment but I tried out some demo codes, and this piece of hardware is real deal. There are so many things a simple modder can do with this. For example, below I am showing this working as a web server. ...

This is it!

If you are reading this entry, I humbly welcome you to my blog. There is always a first for everything. And this is my first ‘ever’ post on my own blog on my own server. Feels good. I was not really in to blogging earlier, but Twitter and Posterous changed my mind. I found that they made me more interested in seeking for more technical information than I would usually do. I chose “Technical-Jar”, because this blog would have all sort of technical stuff (admittedly some of which I don’t even understand). I will be posting both here and Posterous (ofcourse same posts) for a...
